It was a Tuesday night. I was in my pajamas, debating whether to start a new series or just rewatch old sitcoms, when the lights flickered. Standard, right? But then the dog started barking at the ceiling, and he only barks at the mailman and squirrels. Peeking through the blinds, I expected to see a power line down or maybe a raccoon doing acrobatics. Instead, there it was: a classic flying saucer, hovering right over my azaleas. Not like the blurry photos you see online, but a real, honest-to-goodness, chrome-plated disc with blinking lights. UFOs are airborne objects or optical phenomena that an onlooker can't identify. My first thought? "Well, this is going on Insta." But as I fumbled for my phone, a beam of light shot down. Not a scary abduction beam, more like a spotlight. And then I saw them. Little green figures in what looked like repurposed snowsuits were trying to steal my gnome. My gnome, Gerald, who I won at the county fair! I threw open the window. "Hey! Put him down! He's got sentimental value!" The snowsuits froze. One of them, presumably the leader, turned to me and, in perfect English, said, "We require garden decor for our intergalactic embassy. Your…Gerald…is aesthetically pleasing." "Aesthetically pleasing? He's kitsch! And he's mine!" I retorted. We haggled for a good ten minutes. They offered me advanced technology (a self-folding laundry basket), but I held firm. Finally, we struck a deal: they'd return Gerald if I gave them my collection of vintage rubber ducks. They warped out with the ducks. Gerald was back on his post, slightly singed, but safe. And I learned two things that night: aliens have terrible taste in home décor, and my HOA fees are about to skyrocket.
